Admissions Requirements

In order to be considered for admissions, international undergraduate applicants should submit:

1. Application for International Undergraduate Admission

2. Non-refundable application fee of $70 . When applying online you must pay via credit or debit card to submit the application.

3. Proof of English language proficiency

Non-native speakers of English are required to provide evidence of English proficiency by submitting one of the following:

  • TOEFL score of minimum 80 (Internet-based). The school code for ECU is 5180.
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or higher
  • 450 on the SAT I Critical Reading (minimum score for the new SAT-EBRW is 510)
  • 19 on the Combined English/Writing section of the ACT
  • Applicants who have completed at least 24 credit hours at a U.S. institution of higher education and received a grade of "B" or better for an academic English writing/composition course will be exempt from the English proficiency requirement.
  • Successful completion of the highest level of the ECU Language Academy (ECULA) exempts applicants from the English proficiency requirement.

The SAT code for ECU is 5180 and the ACT code is 3094.

In lieu of all of the above, ECU will accept the following minimums:

  • CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)                          Grade of C or better
  • CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)                                Grade of A
  • APIEL (Advanced Placement International English Language Test)       3 or better
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery)                 80 or more

Conditional acceptance as an undergraduate international student
  • Students who do not meet the English language proficiency requirement but otherwise qualify academically may be admitted conditionally to East Carolina University. Applicants who do not submit TOEFL, IELTS, SAT or ACT scores at the time of the application will be required to attend at least one session of the ECU Language Academy. English language proficiency requirement may be met by successful completion of level 5 of ECU Language Academy. 4. Academic Records
  • Applicants must present official (original) school records (transcripts) from all secondary schools previously attended. If applicable, an official statement of examination results must come directly from the examination board. Official records submitted to ECU become its property and will not be returned to the student or sent to another institution.
  • Non-English documents must be officially translated. The translation should be literal, word-for-word and not interpretive. Both the original records and the official translation must be submitted.
  • Copies of secondary-level school records certified by the school with an original ink stamp and sent directly from the school to East Carolina University are acceptable. A true copy authenticated by an embassy official, U.S. Educational Advising Centers or the Ministry of Education can also be submitted. Documents notarized by a notary public are not acceptable.
  • Transfer applicants over the age of 21 do not need to submit secondary school records.
  • Transfer applicants who have attended institutions overseas should request a course-by-course evaluation of their university-level coursework from an evaluation agency that is a member of NACES. An official evaluation should be sent directly from the evaluation agency. Copies of the documents based on which an evaluation was completed should be sent to ECU as well. Transfer students who have attended U.S. colleges or universities should request for their transcripts to be sent to ECU Office of International Affairs and must have a minimum of 24 transferable hours with at least a 2.5 GPA. Included in the 24 transferable hours students will need to have the equivalency of ENGL 1100 composition class.
  •  All credits received from a foreign institution will be transferred as departmental electives unless you provide us with course descriptions. We encourage all transfer applicants to get the descriptions from your institution (university) and submit a translated version to ECU.

5. Students currently in the U.S. in an F-1 student status

  • In addition, applicants who are currently in the U.S. in an F-1 student visa status are asked to submit copies of all previous I-20s, I-94, visa and passport ID page. If admitted, you will be required to submit a transfer form.

Advance standing credit for secondary level examinations

Effective Fall 2010, advance-standing credits will be considered for the following examinations only after the submission of an evaluation from a NACES member evaluation agency:

  • A-levels
  • French Baccalauréat
  • Italian Maturità
  • Swiss Maturité
  • German Abitur
  • Luxembourg Maturité
