Welcome to East Carolina University
and the New Faculty Orientation Program!
Welcome to an institution with a proud tradition of service and leadership to the people of this region, the state, and beyond. We are pleased you made the choice to join our outstanding faculty, and we look forward to your contributions in our continued growth and development to becoming America's next great national university. We’re glad you are here.
All of us at East Carolina are committed to your success as an educator and a scholar. You will find among our programs and our people the resources to help you realize your aspirations, beginning with New Faculty Orientation scheduled for August 14-16, 2017. Our faculty is excellent, and our degree offerings are extensive. We offer 179 degree programs (12 doctoral, 5 doctoral professional, 2 intermediate, 72 masters, and 88 bachelors and 81 departmental certificates). Many of these programs are nationally ranked for their quality. We are a diverse academic community, and we value the differences inherent in us all. Our student body includes students from 49 states and many countries (undergraduate students from 61 countries and graduate students from 56 countries). Our students include traditional students, adult learners, and learners from a distance. We have invested heavily in technology, so our classrooms and laboratories are on the cutting edge.
The motto of ECU is servire, to serve. We offer a vibrant learning community outside the classroom, including a rich variety of social, recreational, and service activities. Last year over 7,000 students worked with well over 150 community partners to provide over 18,000 hours of volunteerism and service learning in Pitt County and beyond. Faculty are heavily invested in these efforts and taught over 450 courses that incorporate learning in the community. We look forward to your service contributions to the University and to Eastern North Carolina.
ECU is also home to a vibrant and enthusiastic research culture. Integration is a key theme as we engage students and the community in efforts to solve problems that cross disciplinary boundaries. Extramural funding exceeds $40 million annually, and we encourage industry-sponsored research. We have a significant presence with institutional emphases on areas like coastal science and policy, metabolic disorders, economic development, and military issues. Our goal is to increase significantly research activity across our university as we prepare our graduates to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and collaborative members of a workforce prepared for the knowledge-based global economy.
We have recently launched a $500 million comprehensive campaign for our university that will include investments across every area of the university, providing the foundation for achieving our aspirations. We are also committed to the globalization of our campus, providing more students opportunities for international experiences that will prepare them for the world they will inherit.
Our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends know what a difference a sense of belonging makes in a community of scholars. The goal of the East Carolina University New Faculty Orientation Program is to support you in joining our university community. You will be oriented to a variety of resources available to you and your students for teaching and learning, research, and service. You will be given opportunities to network with other new and experienced faculty. You will be invited to participate in our strong tradition of shared governance. We know you will find a place for yourself at East Carolina. Please join us in making East Carolina University an ever-stronger leader in teaching, research, and service. Welcome and get ready because at ECU we are prepared to capture the horizon of possibilities for your scholarship, student success, and impact.
